How Well Do You Know Your Children’s Medicine?

Even if you follow all the guidelines for disease prevention, sometimes your child will inevitably get sick. When this happens, the paediatrician may prescribe pediatric drugs to help them recover. However, because there are so many long and complicated drugs, you may not apprehend what your child is having and why.

Your kid’s pediatrician can answer any questions you have about their prescriptions, and they should be your primary source of information about your child’s health. However, by looking at this list of commonly prescribed pediatric drugs, you can understand what your child might get.

Amoxicillin


Amoxicillin ranks first in the list of most commonly used pediatric drugs. It is a cheap antibiotic that most children can tolerate. Its brand name is Amoxil, but there are many inexpensive standard options. This medicine is taken orally. Young children typically take it in liquid form, while older children and adults take it in tablet or capsule form. It is used to heal:

  • Pharyngitis
  • Ear infections
  • Sinus infection
  • Childhood pneumonia

Amoxicillin/clavulanic acid


The drug is known under the brand Augmentin, which combines the antibiotics amoxicillin and potassium clavulanate. Potassium clavulanate is an enzyme that helps antibiotics fight bacteria that may only be resistant to antibiotics. It is used to treat the same diseases as amoxicillin alone, but it may also be prescribed to kill bacteria from infected bites and oral infections.

Albuterol


Albuterol is a medicine called a bronchodilator. These drugs can treat respiratory diseases by widening the air passages in the lungs (bronchial tubes). It usually relieves asthma symptoms. It is generally administered through metered-dose inhalers or nebulizers. You can also use it as a syrup, but this form of medicine is rarely used.

Cephalexin


Like many commonly used pediatric drugs, cephalexin is an antibiotic. It is sold under the trade name Keflex and is also available as a generic name. You can take it in the form of capsules, tablets, or oral suspensions to treat skin infections such as ear infections, respiratory infections, urinary tract infections, and impetigo.

Azithromycin


Like many commonly used pediatric drugs, azithromycin is an antibiotic. It is sold under the trade name Zithromax, but it is also available as a generic drug. They are usually prescribed for ear infections. You can find it in the form of tablets, oral suspension (liquid), and eye drops.

Fluticasone


Fluticasone is a steroid used in many different drugs. Depending on the combination, it can be prescribed as nasal spray, cream, and ointment. You can use it to treat asthma, eczema, and allergies.

Ibuprofen


Ibuprofen is an NSAID (a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug) used to treat fever, pain, and inflammation. You may already have ibuprofen for children in your medicine cabinet. It can be purchased over the counter in the form of children’s Motrin or Advil. However, you can also use it at prescription strength in some cases.

Cefdinir


This antibiotic is sold under the brand Omnicef ​​and is used to treat sinus infections, ear infections, and pneumonia. Under normal circumstances, antibiotic paediatricians will not prescribe the first type of prescription for these conditions. It is more expensive than some of the more common antibiotics.

Montelukast sodium / Singulair


Singulair is used to treat asthma and relieve symptoms of seasonal allergies. It is a drug called a leukotriene inhibitor. You can use these drugs to prevent or reduce the body’s response to allergens. Even though it can be used as a generic drug, it is often called Singulair.

Prednisone


Prednisone is a corticosteroid. Corticosteroids are a type of drug that decreases inflammation in the body. Prednisone is used to treat asthma attacks, side effects, and allergic reactions to ivy and the like. It is usually prescribed in small doses within a short period.

Nystatin


Nystatin is an antifungal drug used to treat infections caused by fungi (such as yeast). You can take it orally to treat oral diseases such as thrush. It also has topical forms such as creams, ointments, and powders, which can treat skin conditions such as diaper rash.
